About us

Our research team combine expertise in several fields of biology and whale research.

Marie Auger-Méthé started studying whales at the Mingan Island Cetacean Studies (MICS) for two years. She then carried out a photo-identification project on pilot whales in Cape Breton as her honours project. She has now completed her Master’s degree on narwhals at Dalhousie University, Halifax, in the lab of Dr. Hal Whitehead. Marie is currently is working on the movement strategies polar bears use to find food and to cope with the dynamic movement of the sea ice they live on.

Marie and Marianne Dr. Murray Humphries is a professor in the Natural Resource Department of McGill University and a member of ArctNet. His main research interests are mammal energetics, behaviour, and ecology, especially in relation to hibernation, food and fat storage. He is also involved in anticipating the impact of climate change on the traditional foods of the Northern people.

Marianne Marcoux (M.Sc) conducted behavioural studies on zenaida doves in Barbados and on octopuses in Italy. She investigated the diet, vocalizations and fitness of sperm whales’ acoustic clans as her marster's project. She is currently doing her PhD on narwhal populations at McGill University, Montréal, under the supervision on Dr. Murray Humphries.

Dr. Hal Whitehead is a Killiam Professor at in the Department of Biology at Dalhousie University. He has been studying the whales since 1977. He has developed several new techniques to investigate the behaviour, social structure and population biology of several whale species. His work is principally on sperm whales, but students of his lab study beluga, pilot, sperm and northern bottlenose whales as well as bottlenose dolphins.
